Grosmont dates from the middle of the 18th Century and the coming of the Whitby to Pickering Railway. The Co-op and Post Office occupy a building of this period. Formerly the Tunnel Inn, it had stables for horses that worked the early railway before the days of steam. Originally known as Tunnel, Grosmont acquired its present name soon after it became a boom town following discovery of ironstone.
